Questions of Visitors September 25, 2008 Brittany in West Hollywood, California: Q. Why do celebrities wear hair extensions? A. It usually boils down to a few reasons. A celeb has short hair but prefers it long, and doesn't want to wait for it to grow out. Or she already has long hair, but it's thin, and she wants more volume. Another reason why celebrity hair is often enhanced today is it can get damaged due to frequent exposure to excess heat and harsh chemicals in the regular process of preparation for acting roles, television appearances, magazine photoshoots, etc. Extensions can mask the damage. Ashley Tisdale says she uses them due to damage. Some movie roles require short or even very short hair, but not all actresses like to wear it so short. When the film is completed, they can go back faster to the length they prefer with extensions. On Sept. 7, Tina in Albuquerque, NM, was wondering why Faith Hill wears extensions. Are you sure she does? The bottom line is celebs can afford the enhancements, they are somewhat fashionable, and they think that they look better with them, and/or know feel more confident wearing them. August 9, 2008 Laura from Queen's Village, New York: Q. What color brown is Mandy Moore's hair and where does she get it cut? A. It's actually not brown any more. She probably gets her hair cut at more than one salon, but yesterday it was at: Bungalow On Melrose Place When she went in, she had her hair up and it was light brown. When she left it was down and caramel. (Paparazzi caught her.) The "after" style or exit look was very basic so she may have just had her color done. Mandy was also there more than six months ago, back on January 11. Then she left with long chocolate brown hair. Many other celebs and actresses go to the same salon to get their hair done; so it may be one of the top celebrity hair salons in the LA area. August 4, 2008 Tiffany from Piedmont, CA: Q. Which flowers work in hairstyles? A. Frangipane flowers look so pretty. They come in different colors but the ones with a yellow center and white petals are fairly popular. Vanessa Hudgens wore one a few years ago; she looked very cute (see below). The flower has a very soft transition from yellow to white; some of them have a lot of yellow while others just a little in the center. They are not really big and so they fit most occasions. Every day brides and other girls are thinking about which flowers would look good in their hair especially in the summer. Two thirds of brides in fact said in a poll they are going to wear them at their wedding. Roses, either large or small, are quite popular. A hibiscus is dramatic but a beautiful, very summery look; a white one looks nice in honeymoon or beach pictures. Most flowers are usually chosen based on a color that complements a look (dress, makeup, haircolor or a combination of these).
July 27, 2008 Megan in Pittsburgh, PA: Q. What does the back of the pob haircut look like? A. The back is pretty normal for a short hairstyle unlike the front. It is also quite neat and professional-looking.
Q. Which celebrities wear hair extensions? A. It's difficult to compile a full list, but many female stars currently wear them or have worn them in the past. Some extensions are well-disguised because they are made of excellent human hair and professionally installed; whereas others are obvious simply because last month you saw the celeb with short hair and this month it's over a foot long! Ashlee Simpson had a short bob hairstyle a year or two ago and then she had long red hair. Then there are a few girls who have their own extension lines like her sister Jessica Simpson who wears hair extensions all the time. Paris Hilton has DreamCatchers. Miley Cyrus wore them for her TV show and must have got so used to wearing them all the time she also has them when she's not acting, like when she's going out at night. Another clue of who gets help is not just added length but a sudden increase in volume. Celebs who already have long hair like extensions just to make it look much thicker. Carrie Underwood is a good example. She even told Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide magazine that she wanted little girls to know she uses them--probably because she didn't want them to get frustrated trying to replicate the hot look without help. Even though there is still a stigma to men admitting they wear a piece, there is no longer really anything negative about women admitting they use extensions. Who else? Mandy Moore. Hilary Duff. Halle Berry. Alicia Keys. Britney Spears. The list goes on and on. (Search site for extensions to see examples.) July 20, 2008 Molly in Oakton, VA: Q. When is a layered haircut not a good idea? A. There are many ways to layer hair that look flattering (lots on this site). The cuts that don't work are the ones where the hair shape is really bad and doesn't suit the face shape, like when it's too thick and heavy looking near the top. That's a mess. You need to get the proportions right especially with chunky layers. Hairstyles with lots of layers aren't such a good idea for some professional women. A few of the anchors at CNN now have that style and it just doesn't look right. A few, however, have lightly layered haircuts and they look perfect. There isn't really a time or person for whom a few layers is a bad idea. It's a nice way to make a trim a little more cute and stylish, including with bobs. July 18, 2008 Marilyn in Las Vegas, NV: Q. Are bob haircuts sexy? A. Good question. Whenever a new hair trend starts, it's a good idea to stop and ask if it's actually sexy before getting it (and then wondering). A lot of short hairstyles are sexy, but the bob isn't generally the first short style most people think of when they think of "short and sexy." Cute is probably the word more associated with bobs than anything else. But there are many different kinds of bobs and some are sexier than others. The plain, straight, tapered, chin-length bob is cute; but dressing it up a little more, adding something special to it can make it more sexy. The sexiest celebrity bob of the current trend isn't Victoria Beckham's Pob, Jenny McCarthy's cut, or any of the bobs by Katie Holmes' hairdresser; it's Katherine Heigl's perfect interpretation of Marilyn Monroe's wavy bob. In fact Katherine's is sexier than Marilyn's! Texture, waves, curls or some combination can make bobs look really hot. Choose the style that flatters your features and makes you feel most confident. June 21, 2008 Melissa in Yonkers, NY: Q. Who should wear the bob haircut? A. Bob haircuts are suitable for most face shapes (round, square, heart-shaped, diamond), but they are better for women with average or small sized heads. Take three supermodels as examples. Christy Turlington has a small head and she's worn bobs before and looked great. Linda Evangelista had a bob in the 90s and 00s, too (07); her head is about average size; she looks cute in a bob. Meanwhile Cindy Crawford, who has a larger than average head, has never had a bob; she's always had long hair. It's just an issue of proportions; a short haircut on a big head doesn't look any better than big hair on a small head. Bobs are also good for any age. You see kids with bobs and Anna Wintour who is over 50 has one, too. Another thing to consider is your jawline. Many bobs draw attention to the jawline either because they are chin-length and/or curl in toward the chin. Others are actually cut shorter and stop opposite or fall to the jaw. If you don't have a chin or it's discrete, or you're a little heavier and have a double chin, obviously a bob is likely to draw more attention to it. Same again if you have a prominent chin. A traditional bobbed hair design will tend to point it out. Bob haircuts can be really good at playing up high cheekbones (e.g., a jaw-length bob). Sophia Loren had a very nice bob in one of her movies many years ago and nobody has high cheekbones like her. It's all about the angles. A short tapered bob with prominent cheekbones would be really sharp! If you're not sure you should get bobbed, buy a wig. The basic bob wig is one of the most common kinds. (That's also why some girls don't like plain bobs--they look too much like wigs!) May 30, 2008 Q. Why did Katie Holmes cut her hair? A. Which time? She's gone to the hairdresser for a new short hairstyle about three or four times in the last year or two. If you're referring to her first big cut (long to short hair makeover) that got a lot of attention, it has been suggested she thought it could help her career. Or perhaps she didn't want to look too plain next to her friend, the ultra chic fashion icon, Victoria Beckham. Another possibility is she didn't want to look so much younger than her much-older husband, Tom Cruise. Maybe she feels as the wife of a mega star it's her role to step up her style and fashion game. Nobody really paid too much attention to her before. But we all know that A-list celebrities are photographed more often, and same goes if you marry one, so you feel the need to look better (better clothes and hotter hair). The surprising number of different short Katie Holmes hairstyles could be a sign of dissatisfaction within her marriage (as is often rumoured in the news). If she feels she can't control her circumstances at least there's some satisfaction knowing she can control her appearance. Or it could just be she has access to more money now and doesn't think twice about spending more of it on high-fashion haircuts and haute couture designer gowns. (Some of her styles are on this site.) May 18, 2008 Q. Why is Miley Cyrus's hair ssooooo long? A. It has been extreme, hasn't it? She or her stylist must think she looks good in hair extensions. But the poll results on this site show that her extra long wavy hairdo with extensions she wore earlier in '08 did not go over well. She is one of the most popular stars, but that was her least popular style. Miley is surrounded by various beauty professionals, however, so we don't know if the blame can be put on her or not. The issue in part was it just didn't look very natural. When it's so obvious somebody is wearing extensions because of the volume, length, haircolor, etc., it's a problem, especially for younger women or teens for whom natural looks are most flattering. At the same time she had that extreme hair, Miley also wore too much eyeliner. That just doesn't work for a 15-year-old girl! (She later wore about half as much for a morning TV show performance and look 1o times better.) May 17, 2008 Q. Why do women like extremely short haircuts? A. Half of women say (on a poll here) they don't like doing their hair. Many polled teenagers say they spend 1-5 minutes doing their hair every day. When you have extremely short hair it can save you maintenance time. Still, it's a very small percentage of females who have an extremely short hairstyle (3%). Some girls couldn't imagine it and would never go for such an extreme makeover; whereas others find it liberating. It's a great way to show off a beautiful face; it certainly worked for Halle Berry! There aren't very many extreme short celebrity hairstyles that are really popular today and there have been very few in the past. Besides Halle's cool crop in the 90s and Twiggy's boyish crop hairdo in the 60s, what other very short famous haircuts can you remember? The only one that comes close is Alyssa Milano's pixie hairstyle (five years ago). Ladies still want it today even though it never got anything like the exposure of Victoria's cut or Jennifer Aniston's. |
