[+] Black Hair Styles and Care Guide (September and October 2008)

Eve in Oct. '08 has a cool and creative new hairstyle. It's long, original, and colorful. It's got different highlights and an original shape, but it also follows the latest trend that is focused on one side. Wavy, flippy, and fun!
Qui Rice in Sept. at the MTV Music Awards. The gorgeous star Qui has a few dark blonde streaks in her amazing jet black hair. It is long with big, bouncy curls. Like other girls today, she's moved it all to one side of her head.

Rhianna's new summer hairstyle in June 2008. Back and side view. Thick to the top of ear level, then very short with a mini tail at the end.

Missy Elliott (37) with a funky new black hairstyle. It is top-heavy, piecey, and wavy with a fringe that's sharply angled and messy. Missy also has a few bright dark red slices of color in her hair. July 2008.

Estelle's short haircut in May 2008 (left; right is in June). Very short on one side and swept over onto the other. Simple, low-maintenance, but edgy. It may not be a new African American hairstyle trend yet, but Fantasia Burrino had a similar look earlier in '08, too. Will it catch on? We'll see.

Local 4 News Morning Anchor Rhonda Walker in new beveled black bob haircut with asymmetrical bangs. Cute and professional style with sharp angles. Pictures of front, back, and side. July 3, 2008. Courtesy Click on Detroit. For more black bob hairstyles, see the TV section.

Elise Neal (42) with a fashionable tapered bob. She dyed it a beautiful shade of brown and added a few subtle highlights. It is like other bobs but its distinctive feature is a far offcenter parting. It is a clean, neat professional look. Another image of Elise this year shows her with bangs. Maybe she found this haircut in early '08 too annoying with the hair getting in her eyes (almost unavoidable with a sideparting so far to the side).

Not up for straight hair? How about a curly weave bob? African American star Beverly Todd (62) has a medium brown hairstyle that falls just on her shoulders and has heavy curly bangs. Nice texture for her signature hair design. This style looks fun and makes her look younger.

If you're looking for pictures of black hairstyles for kids, this is a good choice. Children look good in modern bobs just like adults. Alex De Castro looks very cute with this chin-length bob. Photo is from a celebrity event in 2008.

Regina King (37) updated her look with a new short black hairstyle. It is cut above the ear and has a sharply angled assymetrical fringe. Nice low-maintenance style for 2008.

Rachel Hollingsworth with extremely curly weave for cute mid-length black hairstyle

Telisha Shaw (24) with perfect straight black hair. Fringe of this weave is superflat and slightly jagged. Great easy style for the beautiful and successful dancer's gorgeous silky hair.

Brandy (28) wearing cool medium black hairstyle with chunky jagged or sawtooth layers and bangs. A different new look for her that we saw at Spring 2008 Fashion Week in Los Angeles. Pretty easy low-maintenance straight cut for African American girls.

Keesha Sharp (35) with big sexy black hairstyle. Wavy, teased, and long... any way you look at it, that's hot!

Cheryl James aka Salt and Cheryl Wray (41) with a short African American hairstyle that's partly curly. Conservative and cute style for middle-aged women of color.

Chante Moore (41) looks positively radiant in her stylish formal black hairstyle. We'd be lucky to look this fine in our 40s! The gorgeous singer gives us a good example of how to dress up your hair with delicate loose pieces on either side. Good 2008 prom look or special occasion style.

Christina Milian in May 2008 with beautiful long hair and subtle highlights. It's classic, thick, and luxurious dark hair. Cute dress, too!

Judine Somerville's straight summer hairstyle with light brown streaks in her medium black hair. (June 2008) It's an easy modern hair design with bangs. Works for everyday or night look.

Veronica Webb's new chin-length bob hairdo with messy bangs. The former black fashion model looks very different with this slightly layered, razor-finished cut. The bold blunt style with a full fringe that covers her eyebrows looks a bit like a helmet and so somewhat masculine (May '08).

Michelle Williams photo is recent. She is so beautiful it's ridiculous. Michelle has a simple should-length cut or weave that has slightly chunky pieces and large, soft waves that flip out. Very flattering African American hairstyling.

Jennifer Hudson's new bob hairstyle (spring 2008) follows the trend which Rhianna helped start in 2007. If you like a low-maintenance, easy straight cut, bobs are the ticket. It doesn't get much easier than this. Jennifer had a pretty extreme black hair makeover, didn't she? Do you remember what she looked like last year before she got short hair? She had a shiny weave that was medium and very curly. Here's a pic of Jennifer in the fall of 2007:

Jet black celebrity curls of Jen Hudson catch the evening light for a pretty Hollywood style of glitz and glamour.

Star Jones (45) was an early adopter of the new bob trend in 2007. The brilliant attorney and talk show celeb also colored her black hair light brown. That's a beautiful shade, isn't it, for her skin tone? Bobs are good choices for any age; they always look sleek and professional. Plus they are easy to maintain every day. This is one of her best relaxed hairstyles; it has a wonderful shine or shimmer.

Mary J. Blige (36) has a medium-length bob with bangs. It is much longer than Star's bob and she dyed her black hair blonde instead of brown. Mary has the trendy coloring style of blonde on top and darker hair underneath on both sides.

Tyra Banks (34) with very big hot hairstyle full of curls and gorgeous highlights (March 2008). You can't wear long hair down much sexier than this. Tyra likes to try new hairstyles and lets her stylists loose for her daily TV talk show so they can try different jazzed-up designs. They aren't too wild, though; they are usually more fun than ghetto.

Jade Cole, the model from America's Next Top Model, wears a funky new haircolor style. The dramatic two-tone bob has a chocolate brown "cap" on a golden blonde base.
The high-contrast look is colored to create a blunt and choppy layered style. It's a unique 2008 asymmetrical cut and color for girls who like high drama.
It borrows styling ideas from Victoria Beckham's popular bob, but it's slightly flippy and has much more extreme haircolors. Jade has made it her own.
Welcome to the section of Beautiful Hairstyles just for Black ladies. Here you can see lots of different hot hairstyles in the last few years up to, and including, 2007. (2008 black celebrity hairstyles are being added, even though some ladies today still have the same style this year as they did in '07). The top pic on this page of Rhianna's cute new short hairstyle is from '08.)
The organization is by year in ascending order, because most black girls follow hair fashion to some extent, especially teens, and want images of the latest black hairstyles, or if not the very latest, at least modern ones from the last few years which still look "in fashion."
There are other sections on this site with hairstyles of famous African American women, but this is the place specifically for women of color.
If you have a specific black star in mind whose style you'd like to copy or consider copying, you can search this site by that celebrity's name; then you could see one or more of their different styles. If there's more than one style, you can move from one hairstyle to another by clicking on the thumbnails in the right-hand navigation column below the large pics.
The more popular the celeb, the more pics there are available for you to see, generally speaking. So there are more styles of Rihanna, Beyonce, and Halle than most other black female stars. Availability is based on interest.
Short black hairstyles are still very popular, of course, so there's a gallery just for them.
Most of the black hairstyles here are everyday professional styles you could wear to work or high school, but there is also a gallery of formal black hairdos for Prom, plus a small gallery for special occasions.
Finally, you can see some of the styles highlighted in hairstyles magazines just for African American women. These are the most popular black hair magazines which include: Sophisticate's Black Hairstyles and Care Guide; Hype Hair; and Blactress. Incidentally, in most black communities it is easy enough to find those magazines, but you can also buy the latest issues online (bamm.com).

Ashanti's concert curls on June 6, 2008. Ashanti had a hot new hairstyle for a concert to help promote her new album: The Declaration. Her hair looks like Donna Summer's did years ago, but it's better. It's not quite as big and it's more under control. Very glamorous!

[+] Hype Hair magazine in July 2008 with Ashanti
The latest issue of Hype Hair, "the biggest hair magazine for women of color," features several black stars on the front. With Ashanti in her big sexy hair, there is Rhianna (same style as at the top of this page); Shaun Robinson; Leon; Tyra Banks, and Ciara. It has over 1,000 images of styles; that is more than the current top hair mag for white chicks, which now offers 900 pics. It is also better in one way: it shows different angles of the same styles (front, back, and side).
Its contents includes: Great hair products; Hair Q & A; Short Chic; Long and Strong; The Coloring Book; Color Me Beautiful; The Adorable You Contest; Step-by-Step Style; Girlie Curl; Easy Breezy; The Style Montage; Special Additions; Natural Style; Pretty as a Picture; Sleek Chic; Two Ways to Work That Weave; Awesome Auburn; and Hair Gallery.
How many black hairstyles photos do you usually have to review before you find one you like? Searching online can be easy and free, but if you are very selective, and usually need to see a lot of styles before your next haircut, you're probably better off getting a magazine. It's much faster to flick through pages of different styles in print than downloading them one by one off the internet. Hype Hair costs only about $5.00.
Black celebrity hair product endorsements are inside HH. It has Brandy's big medium-length hairstyle with lots of very small curls in an ad for a Outre Prom 10 weave. "For the natural look you love." Hers is called Bohemian Curl; it is made of advanced natural protein hair. (See ultimahair.com to order.)
Beverly Johnson, the gorgeous black supermodel, looks amazing in a full-page picture. She has shoulder-length piecey curls and waves that look so cute! The colors are brown and golden brown. It's an ad for a handmade wig (amekor.com). "Featuring the Pure Stretch Cap. Makes it the lightest and the most comfortable wig cap ever made."
The Hair Q&A section has answers to two questions. The first is: "I currently have a weave in my hair. It is human hair, but it always looks dry and brittle after I flat iron or curl it, more than my real hair. Am I doing something wrong?" The second: "I don't like putting a lot of grease in my hair. I want it to be moisturized but not greasy. How can I find balance?"
Note that most pictures here at Beautiful Hairstyles are described in the titles of the pages, so if you want to narrow your search to a celebrity and a hair texture, for example, e.g., Beyonce curly, just enter that specific info into your search. You can track which pictures you've already viewed based on the thumbnail border; when you click on one, it is no longer white.

[+] Black Hair Styles and Care Guide magazine (February 2004)
Eve (25) with an extremely cute wavy bob hairstyle. This is from a few years ago (Spring 2004), but isn't that the cutest wavy weave you've ever seen? Now that bobs are fashionable for black women again, this is top black hairstyle. Blonde or black, the color doesn't matter; it's super sexy texture for a chin-length bob. The few loose pieces are a sweet touch. Black women who aren't American but live in Africa, the Caribbean, or elsewhere, and can't buy this U.S. magazine in their country, should consider ordering it online. It's the best black hair magazine in the world. It comes out monthly. The image quality is first-rate and the whole thing is very professionally produced. It has many black celeb hairstyles but many of the models aren't celebrities.
Are you up for a haircolor makeover? Here's a new creative coloring idea from Solange Knowles

Big weave with waves and bangs in brown

Weave with cornrows and curls in red and wine

Book for African American kids: "I Love My Hair!"

Rihanna on January 16, 2010
For more recent haircuts including Halle Berry: 2010 (black and white integrated).

Jada Pinkett Smith (33) with a big black curly weave hairstyle. It's medium-length and looks fun. Jada has a few curls where you could have bangs that need to be trimmed out of the way, but other than that, it's a great look. Excellent black celebrity portrait showing off her beautiful smile and perfect white teeth.

Brooklyn Sudano (24) with a very thick black bob hairstyle. A beautiful chin-length hair design for the pretty African American actress.
