"What will be the next 'it' hairstyle?" OK magazine asked Rachel Zoe, the celebrity stylist ("Fashion for Less Than a Fortune!", December 15, 2008).
Zoe fashions the image of female stars such as Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie, and Jennifer Garner, among many other young ladies.
"Short hair!" she answered. "Everyone is bobbing it, doing angular bobs, cutting bangs. We're also seeing the pixie cut, like Mia Farrow in the '60s."
Farrow had a famous haircut back then because it was so short following a radical makeover. She was known for her long hair but lopped it all off.

[+] Mia Farrow's Famous "Elegant Pixie," Life, May 5, 1967, cut by Vidal Sassoon for $5,000.
"Film director Roman Polanski asked me to fly to the US to work with Mia Farrow," Sassoon later recalled, "who was ... working on a film with Roman, Rosemary’s Baby. I told him I would have to cancel appointments and meetings, so it would cost him $5,000.
"He said, 'No problem,' so I went over and did her hair in the middle of a boxing ring for a press call. It was a circus, and she couldn’t understand why they were interested in her hair.
"I just got on with doing my thing, which received a huge amount of publicity – if I’d realised that I would have charged more!"
"There was wild speculation as to why I'd done it," Farrow wrote in her 1997 memoir. "Some said it was to spite [my husband] Frank [Sinatra] and back in New York, Dali (Salvador), never one to minimize, labeled it 'mythical suicide.' "
After previously having hair half way down her back, she said she just wanted a change.
Pixies aren't that new, really. It was less than four years ago, in 2005, when Sally Hershberger and other New York hairdressers were saying pixies were in fashion.
"Get out your scissors, girls," wrote Tracey Lomrantz (New York Daily News, Aug. 18, 2005). "The pixie cut is back. Take it from Sally Hershberger... the look is hotter than ever."

[+] Hayden Panettiere with chic bob that is angled and highlighted. It follows the '08 trend but may not suit her so well (based on head size and/or shape). SH, however, calls Hayden's cut a hit. "Short hair becomes Heroes star Hayden Panettiere, who removed her extensions to show off an angled bob that's shorter in the back and longer on the sides with no crown layering." Federico Lupo (hairdresser at Julien Farel Salon in Manhattan) thinks her haircut can be improved with layers on top to make her fine hair appear thicker. That's a good idea, because as it is in this photo, her hair looks a bit too flat and plain.
"With stars like Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham making the cut," observes Short Hair magazine (Spring 2009), "the pixie is definitely the most popular new look of the season." That could be jumping ahead a little, because we still don't know how many more women are going to get their kind of cut in '09. It takes more than two to call something a trend.
"If you're thinking of following their lead," advises the mag, "check out these tips from Philip Pelusi, who has salons in Pittsburgh and NYC and his own line of eponymous hair products, on how to get it right.
"Texture is key to the pixie's success, and there should be lots of short layers. 'When used with a texturizing product, the layers create voluminous, younger-looking hair,' says Pelusi.
"A pixie looks best when it's sharp. Get a fresh haircut once a month or every six weeks to prevent it from losing its shape and going too shaggy.
"Side-swept bangs will give the look a modern touch. 'It will soften the overall appearance and bring more attention to your face,' Pelusi explains."
In its section, "Try a New Angle," SH talks about the hair hits and misses, what's hot, and what's not, as well as what's in and what's out in 2009.
The Victoria-Beckham pob is "so last year"; it has softened into "a shorter bob with lots of movement at the bottom." It could become more popular because "it is subtle, not severe."
The other short haircuts they like include those of Anne Palicki (very cute, simple, and soft bob) and Sarah Harding (sharp, chunky pieces at the fringe). They aren't so thrilled, however, with Rachel Melvin's standard bob with wedge in back (not flattering of her face shape). They aren't sure about Kim Wyatt's razored look (it could use some longer parts).

Erin Fetherston with long fringe just past her eyebrows (January 5).
In the months ahead you can expect bangs to become a focal point in hairstyle considerations. Pixies always make bangs an issue because they usually require careful thought and delicate skills. Even if you're just looking at a crop or bob, we could be seeing a shakeup with respect to the fringe.

Black celebrity Miss B with an alternative, uniquely round fringe that stands in stark contrast to the very straight style of Erin (above). It's different and uncommon, but it tends to exaggerate a round face a little too much.
Two possible new looks that may become fashionable, as illustrated by Short Hair, are bangs that are very short (Mae Whitman) and also those that are very straight (Mena Suvari). A third style is very messy (Agyness Deyn). One pic of Posh shows her somewhat messy fringe which they call "roughed up." A fourth, piecy (Ms. Horrorfest), is more likely to be copied.
Simply put, suggests SH, "this season, fringe is the perfect way to up your crop's flirt factor." Not an unreasonable idea, really, since bangs are the hair closest to your eyes.
You can pick up a copy of the featured magazine above (top of page) with lots of women's hairstyles for 2009! Why get a new haircut for fall 2008 when you can get one that will look trendy in the spring of 2009?
Hair Preview 2009 magazine has the sexiest styles, cuts, and color ever, it says. The large, thick mag has over 2,000 photos of new female hair designs for all hair textures—curls, waves, and straight locks—in 146 color pages. You can buy it until November 2, 2008.
Victoria Beckham and Jenny McCarthy set the bob hairstyle trend in 2006-2007, and other celebrities followed them in 2008. There are pictures of a few late adopters on p. 7: Anne Hathaway got a medium bob makeover instead of an extreme new look. (You can still recognize her.)
"Anne Hathaway wears a longer-than-usual version of the [bob. cut with ends that almost hit the shoulders."
Next there's a photo of Reese Witherspoon who looks radically different. She chopped off all her hair and now sports a very simple bob hairstyle. It's chin-length and probably a little shorter than the last short haircut she had a few years ago for Sweet Home Alabama. This one isn't choppy, though, but her fine hair does have some nice layers.
Hayden Panettiere looks so different after finally succumbing to the celebrity bob hairstyle trend. She must have lopped off a good foot of her blonde locks. We've never seen her with a short hairstyle but it looks cute and brings out her beautiful smile.
These three ladies aren't necessarily proof that bobs will be back in 2009. Some might have thought 2008 would be the end of them, but the trend may well last at least another year.

[+] The shoulder-length black shag hairstyle with chunks of bright red highlights (bottom right) looks really cool. It has lots of layers and tons of volume. The short top layers help add height and the model's hair is lightly teased on the sides for a little extra sexy volume. Just slightly messy all over makes it a hot clubbing hairdo.
The brunette (top, far right) on the cover has a long neck and is wearing a super straight medium bob hair design down to her shoulders. She has heavy bangs and a beautiful reddish brown haircolor. It has a good curvature and sheen over her forehead. Low-maintenance all the way.
The blonde (bottom right, second in) has a long tapered bob haircut that mirrors her face shape with a lot of dimension.
Are long bob hairstyles going to be fashionable in 2009 for the girls who want to look trendy with a bob, but don't want to cut off all their hair? Will the already bobbed women grow out their bobs or will they just get shorter in '09?
The brunette bob (top left, second in) is a very short bob at ear-length that plays up the model's high cheekbones to perfection. It is kind of mod-like and still cool with the long, angled, peek-a-boo broken bangs.
The blonde girl next to her (top left) also has one of those cool chic hairstyles with bangs which is shag-inspired. It is an edgy new bob with a blowout that leaves the model's hair looking soft and almost wispy.
After straight bobs dominated in 2008, curly bobs could make an appearance or even become the trend in 2009. The curly model (bottom left, second in) has an extremely curly bob hair design in red and blonde. That would be a really hot 2009 hairstyle, but due to high maintenance it is more likely to be saved for a special occasion as a fun formal hairstyle.
The girl next to her (bottom left) with the dark smoky eyes has a lovely curly updo with a few loose pieces at the back plus a cute headband. Change the headband color to silver and you've got a sweet new wedding hairstyle and accessory for 2009.

[+] Winter 2009 Hairstyles... Introducing 75 new short cuts! Includes sexy piecy looks for baby-fine hair and gorgeous long to short makeovers.
Featured look is "the new slant cut," but it's really very similar to the Pob haircut of 2008.

The Pob

The Slant
It's a bob that is heavier on one side, but this new haircut has a longer and much heavier fringe. The hair is all bunched together instead of split up and piecy. It is less messy, too.
The colors are also quite similar to Victoria's original Pob, but the hair model also has some strong streaks in dark brown, plus the trend of dark under layers (most visible on the side).
Is this the New Pob for '09? If so you could call it The Slant or the Pob 2.0. The hot new hair design is by UK hairdressers Nick Malenko and Royston Blythe (Wolverhamption, England). Hair color is by Michelle Lawley. Will it become a hit in the UK and the US? Most likely only if a celebrity in America gets it and promotes it.
The cover includes the latest short hairstyles of Reese Witherspoon (cute bob); Christina (red); Rihanna (curling fragmented fringe); Taylor (simple design); Adrianne (curls); and Katie Holmes (blunt jaw-length bob cut with straight bangs). [+]

Gemma Arterton (23) had a recent extreme makeover. Last year she had long, reddish brown hair, but now it's very dark brown if not black. It's a choppy medium haircut with bangs that aren't precise. (She may have cut it herself.) Why the change? Gemma, the UK star, apparently is a chamelon, often trying something new. "I never get recognized," she said. "I think it's because my hair keeps changing all the time. People never know it's me!"

Drew Barrymore with very big messy hairdo at the Golden Globes (Jan. 11). Meredith Vieira and fashion guru Stacy London reviewed the gowns and tresses of the stars last night on the Today Show. Stacy said Drew's hair was "like Marilyn Monroe after one too many drinks." She hastened to add, however, "she really pulled it off." It was the stand-out design of the night, to be sure, but Ms. Barrymore is 5'4." Although that is the average of American women, it may be a little petite for really big hair. Stacy nevertheless credited Drew for taking a risk. Courtesy NBC.

Kate Gosselin (34) on April 14 with a new short hairstyle that is like an updated version of the Pob. It is smooth at the front and sides but spiky at the top for the back. Besides the creative cut, Kate also got a good color job with great blonde highlights all over. This is probably one of the best new haircuts so far in 2009. It is both professional and original.

Blake Lively (Jan. 6) of Gossip Girls with glamorous locks for her new movie. Long hair that's layered half-way down is classic and wonderful. It's big, piecey, and super hot. So while other women are following the latest fashions or fads of short hairdos, don't expect Blake to cut it off any time soon. Great portrait! Sharp, closeup, with great tone.
Supermodel Nicole Trunfio (23), who won a modeling contest in Australia, has long, very dark brown hair (Jan. 29). Her natural color looks virtually black, but most of her tresses are dark brown. Nicole also has some highlights further down. It has some layers but they're not emphasized. It's a good, simple, casual hairstyle for teens.

This pageant model has the most gorgeous bob! The cut looks so stunning because of the size and uniformity of the pieces. The platinum blonde haircolor helps enhance the style perfectly by the way makes the pieces catch the light. The overall shape and excellent layers also make this a memorable, fantastic bob. (Courtesy TLC)

"Then" (2003)

"Today" (January 22)
Kimberley Locke, the new black celebrity when we first got to know her as an American Idol star, had long layered hair with both thin and thick streaks of color. Now she looks very different. Kimberley's current black hairstyle for 2009 is a curly bob with no highlights. It's a cute new short cut, but it's a little too high or thick on top at the crown for her, and makes her forehead look larger.

Selena Carvahal (Jan. 5) has the coolest new short hairstyle of the year so far. Her dark red crop is full of personality with lots of texture. The funky fringe is piecey and goes in many directions. It is slightly heavier on one side and only about half is scrunched; there it is somewhat messy. Selena's cut is a fresh look with all kinds of 'twists and turns.'Shanna Moakler (Jan. 23) with a very cute short haircut. It is high at the crown, thick, and has some really pretty waves that fall by her left temple. It's more of a formal evening hairdo, but very elegant ladies could wear it well during the day, too. It is a little flirty but also neat and therefore fine for the work place. Sweet picture, too, isn't it?

Elizabeth Cohen has the sexiest bob of the year so far. That is so hot! The four pictures including front and sides show its top features. It looks traditional from the front, but has a unique shape and lots of volume at the back. Great improvement from her very short pixie in 2003. (Courtesy CNN)
Jenna Elfman's New Cut and Color

Long, big and wavy
Short, light red, and straight
Have you ever seen this actress with short hair? Jenna's sleek angled crop could become a hot new bob. The fine layers and ease of maintaining it are two of its top features. It has wide appeal because it is not only cute but also professional.
The Ladies of Dancing With The Stars at New Year's Eve Party in Las Vegas

Kym Johnson
Cheryl Burke
They compete on TV but who has the best hairstyle? These images show you two very different kinds of cute modern bobs. Kym is curly while Cheryl is straight. The blonde has lots of texture, no bangs, and looks complicated; whereas the brunette's style has a very full fringe and is easy. Cheryl has tons of fine layers which beautifully enhance her fine face shape; while Kym's look is playful and draws out her fun personality.Hispanic Hit?
Eva Longoria's summer 2008 makeover from long to sweet short bob hairstyle with little wave

May 1, 2008
July 21, 2008
Eva flirted with the idea of a bob last year when she wore a faux bob one evening. Then she went in the other direction with long hair extensions (left picture) before finally cutting off all her hair and getting a fashionable bob (right pic). Eva puts her own style on the trendy haircut, though, making it slightly wavy. That touch makes it cuter.
Quite the dramatic makeover, isn't it? Nice fresh summer look! She's obviously a late adopter of the bob, and who can blame her when she had such gorgeous long hair, but the change is suiting her well. She's styled her bob a little differently since this July photo.
Not everyone agrees with this change, however. A print magazine poll, in fact, showed 80% of women (and perhaps men, too) in the survey prefer Eva with long locks. It remains to be seen if the shorter look will "grow" on the public. Not all women get used to short hair--Jennifer Aniston said she hated her short haircut--and she's never had short hair again!
A recent hair magazine praised the new hairstyle, nevertheless, saying it highlights Eva's beautiful face. And that it certainly does. Despite the length, (or perhaps with the help of extensions), it still is still reasonably versatile. Since the above pic was taken, the Latin lady changed it again (see below).
If any more celebrities get bobs this year you can expect to see them still the most trendy 2009 celebrity hairstyles. The basic bob, after all, is a short-hair commitment for at least six months.

Simple and SleekSexy and Sophisticated
Radical Makeover: The Hayden Hack Changed from Wavy to Straight

September 20, 2006
August 9, 2008
Hayden Panettiere's new bob hairstyle is another indication fearless females in Hollywood are continuing the short haircut trend no matter how much hair they have to lose to look in vogue, and no matter whether they're in their 20s (Hayden) or 30s (Eva). This hair trend isn't unique to teens or twentysomething women, or those of any age, really, including mature ladies. A poll on this site earlier showed a high percentage of women planned an extreme makeover or one that would be a major transformation this year. Long and wavy to short and straight like Hayden is one such radical change in style. How much daily maintenance time do you think she saves with her new short haircut?
Bob Alternatives
Because the fashion trend continues to be bobs, some girls are already bored with the current crop, including the looks of Beckham and Holmes, and are looking for completely new bobs. They just aren't completely satisfied with any of the new ideas. Others are looking for the best bobs ever. Hair Preview 2009 magazine actually has a "Best-Ever Bobs" page in its Snip and Save Guide. There are 20 pictures of different hairstyles of models (not celebrities) which range from sensible to extreme.
Other women are looking back at some retro bob styles in the last decade, including Jennifer Aniston's bob; while others may find inspiration from looks that are a little older still (90s).
2009: The Return of the Pixie
Girls night out in New York City: Jennifer and Posh at Marc Jacobs Fashion Show
Victoria Beckham's new pixie haircut in early September 2008 could become the latest cutting-edge hairstyle--after lots of cutting. It is an extreme makeover and it is getting a lot of attention from women some of whom may have copied her last famous hairstyle.

Posh Spice isn't the only girl around town with a pixie. There have been other recent sightings of celebrity pixies: Audrey Marie Anderson; Kimberly Stewart (at a fashion show); soap actress Carolyn Hennessy; Winona Ryder; and Carey Mulligan (UK).
US magazine is not a hairstyle magazine but it's accusing Victoria of stealing Halle Berry's pixie crop hairstyle from five years ago. That was one of the most popular pixie cuts of the time, but Halle's black hair has a different texture. Victoria's is more like Alyssa Milano's. The reality of course is most pixies look the same! And many are only an inch short of a buzzcut.
Opinion of Victoria's New 'Do
VB's new look is so different from her old one. The pixie is a very conservative style and she has it in her natural haircolor. There is nothing extreme about her new hairdo except the length. It is an old classic look instead of something completely different nobody ever saw before. It is super easy to maintain instead of being very high maintenance. It is also pretty easy to cut, and doesn't require the skill of a hairdressing expert.
But does it suit her? Some stylists are saying it does, but Victoria's face and jaw have sharp angles, and the short cut emphasizes those features. Her previous style had creative pieces around her jaw that distracted attention away from her strong edges.

Another thing you don't notice when you see the very short hairstyle on Posh and the photo is just of her is the comparison with her husband. A photo of Victoria and David Beckham together shows her cut isn't much longer than his. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Q. Which hairdresser created Posh's new haircut?
A. Garren. He says he was inspired by Audrey Hepburn and a few other stars.

Audrey Hepburn's Pixie in Sabrina (1954). In the movie she went to a finishing school in Paris and returned with this chic short style (which left poor David Larrabee unable to recognize her). It was a reflection of her transformation from a girl to a woman, and it was perfect for Audrey's sweet personality and elegant speech. It's a pretty simple look but the fringe curl where there's a parting may give some women second thoughts about copying it exactly today. One thing that stands out is her thick eyebrows which are about twice the size of what is common today. Pixies and thick brows are a startling clash. Courtesy Paramount Pictures.

Garren is a top celebrity hairstylist in New York with a salon, so you may be able to get the same cut by him or his top professionals. Garren has cut the hair of famous females for many years including short hairstyles you see on fashion magazine covers. In fact he was the stylist who cut Linda Evangelista's bob in the 90s.

Precise bob that extends the jawline

[+] This dark-haired model has a short haircut that really hugs the face. Half the fringe is short and very straight while the other half is sharply angled. The ends are blunt and beveled for an intriguing look that is fresh and unique. It's the creation of Robert Cromeans. (Ad Courtesy Paul Mitchell)
Why the extreme hair makeover?
Mrs. Beckham told the press she got the new hairstyle because she was bored, and she gets bored very, very quickly. The problem with this extreme cut is you can't do a whole lot with it--it's one of the least versatile hairstyles--and it's going to be a while before she can do anything else with it. You can't easily make it curly or wavy or add much texture. It's stuck in straight mode. What happens when she gets bored in a month or two? Use hair extensions? This style is a big commitment.
Victoria had the choice of letting her Pob grow out or cutting off the assymetrical part (very long on one side). She decided to chop it all off! Victoria Beckham in a pixie hairstyle?! Yes, it's a very short haircut that is even shorter than the last celebrity pixie women loved by Alyssa Milano.

Not every woman likes very short hair so it's still questionable that her new style will be very popular in the months ahead. Alyssa was a big star when she had the above hairstyle a few years ago, but it wasn't copied that much. Victoria, of course, is a bigger star, so her latest look will be copied more.
Another reason we can expect ladies to get it themselves is because it's a clean look and a transitional haircut from the Pob. It is a solution to the problem: How do you grow out a Pob into something semi-decent? Posh Spice didn't, so we have to guess, but it can be hard to imagine what the options are without cutting it off and starting over.

Before you get a pixie cut, consider if your hair type will allow you to style it in a way that looks feminine. Due to the shortness alone, pixie hairstyles on some women are bound to look more boyish or masculine.

Krys Ivory's ultra-short cut. The young musician says it's this short because she just beat cancer, and now both she and her hair are making a comeback.

Lauren Holly (42) with a cool pixie hairstyle that has blonde and caramel haircolor over a brown base. It is a little spiky on top at the back, and a little flippy at the nape of the neck. Great texture and a good short fringe. Excellent choice today because it looks stylish, colorful, and professional.Laura Regan (32) has a very short pixie with dark blonde highlights. One of the trickiest parts of styling pixies is the fringe. It's really frustrating if you can't get it to do what you want. Laura has a slight part offcenter and a small wave. Sweet simple style and very easy to maintain.

Mandy Moore had the most popular pixie haircut of the last several years among teenagers. Even though her latest is an easy mid-length haircut, if the pixie becomes a big hit, lots of teens will probably be looking back to her inspired cut when she was a teen.

Before
After
Kimberly Wyatt (26) got a really cool makeover after chopping off lots of her long blonde hair. Her new look is an asymetrical short hairstyle with lots of razored layers. It is kind of blunt and has a few spiky parts that stick out opposite her cheek on one side; that helps make it edgy and gives it flirty flair. Kimberly also traded in her honey haircolor for dramatic platinum blonde. A+.

Growing Out a Bob: Beauty in Transition From Short to Medium
Bobs of course won't be in fashion forever. Already in early 2008 some girls were tired of bobs, so you can guess many more will bored with them in early 2009.
An In Style magazine reader asked, "I'm getting really tired of my choppy bob; will it be torture to grow it out?" (Sept. '08, p. 334). The hair beauty expert answer, courtesy of Garren the stylist: "A bob gradually changes shape as it grows out, so you shouldn't see any drastic changes."
InStyle recommended Gwyneth Paltrow's medium straight look, which is slightly longer in the front. "If your bob is layered," the mag suggested, "have the back shaped every six to eight weeks to keep it from looking bushy." On the other hand, those with bangs could "start sweeping them to the side as they grow longer, and use small hairpins to hold wayward pieces of fringe back from your face."
Should you decide to gradually transition away from the current trend, but still look semi-fashionable--by growing out a short bob you had in 2008 in some attractive way, instead of cutting it all off--you could style it like one of the fashion models below in 2009.

Jennie Garth's new longer bob (December 4, 2008). It's down to the top of her shoulders and looks perfect on her! Not a bad photo, either. No matter how much older she gets, she always looks cute. This shot was just taken in New York City; good style choice for busy professional New York women in 09. It's low-maintenance and very sharp.
Sarah Shahi (Jan. 5) has a super thick medium bob. It is a very simple style with minimalist waves, but the volume makes it hot. It is mostly all "stuck together" (somewhat helmet-like), but Sarah has a few loose pieces, including one that breaks away over her cheek at the front. It is easy to do but you may prefer to add a little more texture or small flips here and there.

Then
Now
Christina Applegate had a short bob (about an inch shorter than the standard-issue chin length ones) back in 2006. Now it's a mid-length one with fine layers that start a little higher than where the other one ended (about opposite her mouth). The longer version is a little harder to maintain just because razored ends need more care, but her latest look is very flattering. She is the People's Choice for acting and her hairstyle may become very popular, too.

Renee Zellweger's long bob for New in Town movie
Flashback: Sarah Michelle Gellar ten years ago
Renee is probably wearing a wig for her latest flick. (Last year it was significantly shorter.) In any event, this one is so easy and has excellent highlights. There are 1" thick blonde panels for her straight hair with a reasonable amount of contrast between the brown and blonde. You'll probably see more similar styles in the months ahead as ladies grow out their bobs. It's a very basic look; it doesn't appear to be layered at all; and it has no bangs. But that brings more focus to the hair colors. (Courtesy Lions Gate)

Lori Loughlin (44) on Jan. 7 looking so lovely with her medium hairstyle. It has long waves on both sides, but they are at a slightly different angle due to the off-center part. It is beautifully thick and includes a mixture of a few tones with light brown and dark blonde. Her roots, however, need some color. Even so, Lori still looks as if she's in her 30s, not 40s. It is so flattering on her.
AnnaLynne McCord (21), the star of the new 90210 series, with a deeply wavy style. Her model good looks land her hair magazine covers and inspire her to try many different kinds of hairstyles on the red carpet and at other Hollywood events such as premieres. This is a photo of her formal hairstyle at the 35th Annual People's Choice Awards.

Alino Cho (Jan. 14) with her medium bob. The soft wave at the top looks elegant. However, this is an example of a good style on the wrong person. Why? The haircut is chic enough and has pretty, subtle highlights, but it makes a larger- than-average-sized head look even bigger. Women with a fairly petite frame need to make sure everything is balanced. Alina would look better with hair closer to her face which sort of 'shaves off' the sides of her head. She could also look really sharp with a short bob cut to her chin.
Sienna Guillory (Jan. 15) aged 33 has a very pretty, long, wavy hairstyle. The attractive design has the perfect shape, length, and hair colors to frame her face. Her blonde streaks are mostly quite thin and in some places there are very thin slices. So it is likely one of the most flattering styles she could ever wear. With her beautiful hair, face, teeth, and nose, you can see why this UK beauty was a fragrance model a few years ago for a top international brand. She still looks as if she is in her 20s, not 30s.

Named one of the 10 best-dressed women of last year, Anne Hathaway scored the cover of Vogue for January 2009.
Although the magazine is mostly about fashion trends, and doesn't usually have much on hair, this issue has a few things.
It announces a comprehensive line of new hair care products from master hairstylist Oribe. There's a fun picture of him and Christy Turlington (wearing a very cute updo) on p. 74.
"I've known Oribe for more than 20 years," the super model said. "He has given me every major haircut I've had."
(You can get his stuff at Oribe.com.)
Also there is an article (p. 146) on red hair where model Coco Rocha goes from brunette to red. The cover is calling ladies in 2009 to "become a redhead."
Vogue in its lead story shows a pic of Anne with an ultra simple, "prison-issue" bob that falls straight down to just above her chin (p. 122). "Director Jonathan Demme ordered her hair cropped for Rachel Getting Married as a way to erase traces of the Princess Diaries Anne Hathaway." They succeeded. Yet Vogue doesn't say if she resisted. On the opposite page, however, there's a gorgeous image of the 26-year-old star in a unique, high-fashion dress wearing a jazzed-up bob that's super soft with the most adorable curly texture. It would make a fantastic formal evening hairstyle this year or any time. Certainly it's one of her best.

The Bob to Pixie Makeover

Jennie Garth's bob with blonde highlights (Beverly Hills 90210, Season 8) Courtesy Fox. If you had a simple monochrome bob in 2008, in 2009 you could jazz it up with some new haircolor. After she got a short hair makeover, Kelly Taylor lost the bob and had one of her best haircuts ever... a gorgeous pixie! It looks perfect from the front, sides, and back. The chunky layers rock and the little flips are sweet.

Mary J. Blige (Jan. 7) has one of the most cool 2009 black hairstyles. The cut itself is new and funky. The parting is very far off on the side and the fringe is very sophisticated with layers and waves. It has a nice, thin, piecey texture. The haircolor style is also unique and intriguing. Besides the advanced lowlights everywhere, at the back and above the ears it has chunky black sections that are mixed up with the dominant color: blonde. It is quite striking as elaborate and feminine. It would take a talented hairstylist and colorist to duplicate but you would stand out from the crowd this year.

Angela Peel (25) in cute black bob with pinkish red highlights. This is a cool, fun new look that's stylish, too. Next year there will be lots of too simple bobs that are crying out for a new haircolor or highlight style.

Alessandra Ambrosio (27) represents the best of Brazil. The international fashion model is a Latina inspiration to women the world over for her hair like most VS stars. Now she has it long and hot as ever with ultra sexy highlights. The roots could use a touch-up, but those highlights are off the hook! They are so well-blended they could make you jealous. The combo of casual, beachy style with the professional 'lites rocks!
Alicia Rountree (early 20s) with a brilliant blowout for her dirty blonde hair. It's very long and thick with creative distribution and coloring of layers. Her highlighting style is very thin slices of medium blonde applied with great discretion in only a few places, and then only for short lengths. That's quite unique but very appealing. Her big hair may be a bit much for her small head, but it's still a smoking hot hair design!

Bonnie Somerville (34) now looks much more mature than she did five years ago. That's what darker eye makeup and a sexy new hairstyle can do for you. Instead of plain, straight hair, she enjoys long layered locks full of big, soft curls; sweeping waves; and golden highlights. The dimensional difference is dramatic. It's one of those perfect evening hairstyles from Hollywood that looks professional and flirty.

Ashley Argota in very long, wavy Asian-American hairstyle (Jan. 29). That is so hot! Good chance the young star is wearing extensions. Even though the color of all her hair is pretty similar, on the top of her head the texture seems somewhat different. Asian women with long hair look great, but hers may be a bit too long for her head size. In any event, it makes a bold fashion statement.

Marta McGonagle (Jan. 22, 2009) has her very dark hair styled similar to a Rachel. It is face-framing and has lots of layers, starting with a contour that follows the profile of her chin. Layers were big last year and always seem to remain popular for girls with long hair.

Hilary Duff's haircut with lots of layers on September 3, 2008 (Courtesy Ellen)Hil with brown hair (2007). It's sometimes very difficult for blondes to get used to brown.
Long layered hair started to get more popular in '08, so expect to see this celebrity hairstyles trend continue in '09. It would be good if short hairstyles with layers also become fashionable next year; so the bobbed designs get a creative makeover or touchup without being crazy.

Mandy Moore (24) at a recent charity event (Sept. 5, 2008). She has a big chunky layered haircut. The nice golden haircolor looks a little browner than what she had in the spring. (She's also probably wearing extensions.)
Ashley Tisdale (23) at the 2008 Music Video Awards (Sept. 7). She has a popular razored and layered hairstyle with angled fringe. Ashley also has a new cool haircolor style which is lighter near the top and very dark brown at the bottom.

Fashion shows are often reviewed for the hairstyles as well as clothing to anticipate the next new hairstyle trend. The above picture is a model from the 2008-2009 Chanel fashion show in Paris, France. She has a natural look with beautiful long wavy hair. Even if it doesn't become the "in" look, it's still a good choice in 09, because it's a classic.

Katie Holmes' latest hairstyle in 2009 (01-21). The bangs are now gone but it's still short and cute. The change was a good decision, because the bangs she once had (see below) made her look much too young and even childish.

[+] What's the story on the new Katie Holmes' jaw-length bobbed hairstyle? Where did it come from? Did she copy Victoria Beckham again? No. She copied fashion models. Karl Lagerfeld's models (see above right) had this 1930s style for his Fall 2008 runway fashion show. Lagerfeld also had his long-time muse Claudia Schiffer in a black bob for his latest print ad campaign (Vogue magazine, September 2008).
