This page was like a blog that was continually updated with late 2010 looks and previews for '11 until the start of the new year... Click the Page 1 link above for all new pics since January 1, 2011.
The focus at the start of the month switches from style to color. Check out which ladies are getting haircolor makeovers and who is going Ombre. P. 48 is for redheads.
The latest buzz is Jennifer Aniston's new 'do (see page 31) and Hillary Clinton needing one. Early reaction among her peers (women her age and older) is strongly in support of Jen's new look (45% give it five stars), while 40% aren't impressed. Meanwhile 92% agree that Hillary Clinton needs a haircut.
As we begin a new month we still haven't seen any new hairstyles trends. Nobody can say yet with any certainty what length, texture, or color is "in." That's not unusual, however, at this time of the year. Most celebrities last month were focused on Hollywood award ceremonies and only showed off their updos and other formal designs which are typically classic, not new.
Furthermore, the previous style leaders such as Jennifer Aniston and Victoria Beckham, who set the last big trend, have nothing fresh to offer. Jennifer lately has actually been dissing her old style while not revealing an alternative. Victoria has been less visible in recent months while focusing on her family. She is pregnant with her fourth child; therefore her locks are probably the last thing on her mind.
The next big thing may be just around the corner. Meanwhile you have to pick and choose from the various recent looks of the stars. See them via the pages linked at the top of this column. There are already over 40 photos taken this year.
Jennifer Aniston Controversy
This site has recently had a spike in traffic with visitors who wanted to learn more about the Rachel Haircut. Why? Jennifer Aniston recently slammed it. Can you believe that? She didn't just say it wasn't her best cut ever; she completely trashed it: "I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen."
Huh? Say what? It was the most popular design in American and even world history, and it was on her head. And it may have been part of what made her famous. So why did she want to say anything bad about it?
Jen may owe many women an apology. She clearly didn't realize that in making the disparaging comment she insulted thousands of women all around the world who got the hairstyle in the 90s not to mention those ladies who have it now!
Is her very surprising statement which appears to be some kind of emotional self-mutilation a legitimate reflection of how she truly feels? Or was she just having a bad day and made an emotional outburst that would draw attention to her?
If she really felt it was hideous, why didn't she ask her hairdresser to change it in 1995? If you were sitting in your hairdresser's chair and had just got the worst style you'd ever seen, would you have kept quiet or demanded changes? At the very least anyone feeling diplomatic or reserved would say nothing then and there, but immediately go to another salon and get somebody else to fix it. Or they would simply get a completely new cut if it were too difficult or too short to salvage.
In any case, even if Aniston really thinks the Rachel was awful, she is wrong. When 75-80% of women in this site's poll give it five stars and only 6% rate it one star, feel free to take her words with a grain of salt. The style isn't one of the worst ever; it's one of the best! (Almost no other haircuts receive more than 50% five stars.) It's her latest comment that will go down in history as one of the worst ever on hairstyles.
Just from a PR perspective, she should have said nothing. If your haircut had been so much in demand and helped millions of women become your fans, would you have said anything bad about it even if you hated it?! Why undermine part of your legacy or offend many fans? You have to feel bad for Chris McMillan, her stylist. His cut made him famous. Will he fire her? How is she going to do damage control?
Well, that's the face palm moment of the year so far. She can't even deny it as gossip because she said it to Allure magazine.
"Grunge Glam" Color
"I loathe this new hair trend of purposely dyeing the roots dark! It is so beyond awful and I don't get it."
In narrow cirlces during '10, socalled Ombre Hair was fashionable. This is where there's a gradual change in color--usually two tones--such as blonde to brown. Not to be confused with "hombre," the Spanish word that means "man or youth," ombre is French for "shadow."
The origin for glamour use may be traced to a creative advertisement a few years ago where a white model with long hair and pale skin had the blunt ends of her straight hair dipped in red paint.
To say it was a fashion trend at first seemed like a bad joke or weak sarcasm. It was more likely some lazy people couldn't be bothered to get their color redone, so they just let it grow out. But then they claimed, "No, it's supposed to be like that. This is a fashion statement!"
Really high contrast (e.g., dark brown to bleached blonde) makes it seem as if somebody dropped a bucket of paint on your head. The color transition can be subtle, but does that make it much better?
Critics of Ombre say it's flattering on very few heads. The funny thing is the vast majority of women say roots showing is the most offensive neglect other females allow to their tresses. They hate it even more than locks which are unwashed or lack personality. So why should they like anything which is so similar to that!? Well, the reality is many don't.
Who would want to pay for it? When you see an Ombre girl in the street, you may wonder if she is on her way to a salon, not coming from one (after shelling out lots of money). It's as if she got her roots done but used cheap color. Then she got caught in the rain, and all the dye got washed out.
In an online discussion for entertainment news and gossip, there were pictures of Hilary Duff which caused confusion. They showed her standing outside a salon; half her hair was dark and the other half was light. Some girls thought she had just got a hip Ombre job; whereas others said, No, she's on the way to her appointment!
One person online described the new coloring style as "a little dirty." Another suggested Ombre works for wavy or curly hair, but on straight she would "resemble a piebald pony!" (Hilary Duff had it with waves, however, and she looked like a mess.)
"Hate the Ombre hair thing on her," complained one chick. "It looks like she dipped the ends in a bucket of bleach or something."
Ombre has appeared on long locks and even short bobs. Without the right makeup and clothes it is extremely difficult to pull it off. To be frank, it is an all-or-nothing style. You need to fully commit otherwise blank stares and puzzled looks will follow you. The public will wonder if you just came from a hair show where all kinds of rare and exotic hairstyles and colors are found.
There are trends that come and go, and America has certainly been overdue for a new coloring trend, but this one can't leave quickly enough. Not surprisingly, it didn't catch on; only a few celebrities got it, making it a quick fad. It's still not clear who had it on purpose and who didn't.
Ombre may only work for folks who are usually very edgy and regularly choose alternative haircuts and colors. It is so far on the other end of the spectrum for clean, polished looks. It is messy and grungy. If you are not already anti-establishment, save your money for the next fashionable colors and avoid a two-tone disaster which could get you sent home from work.

Reese Witherspoon (34) at the premiere of her new movie with an old, classic layered hairstyle. It's always in style, and some visitors to this site last year said it was going to be their next cut. But on her because of where the layers start it could draw extra attention to her prominent chin. Reese is one of the more popular stars for celebrity hairstyles but not just for women her age. Teenage girls also look to her for ideas, according one teen magazine. Compare the above picture with a promo shot for the How Do You Know? movie poster below.

Flashback: Short and cute for
Vogue cover (Nov. '08)
December 7

Michelle Williams (30) at the premiere of "Blue Valentine" in New York City. She has grown out her pixie and now sports this pretty short hairstyle that's still off her ears. With the strong angles and full bangs it's similar to Shear Genius star Tabatha Coffey's cut. The near-platinum blonde color is similar, too. This is a really nice look for Michelle thanks to the variety of angles in her fringe and full coverage. It's cute and modern but also starting to look a bit like a dreaded combover.

Kelly Osbourne (26) has grown out her short hairstyle and created this big medium design with bangs that cover 2/3 of her forehead. The blonde color is a little different, too; there's a very pale shade of red in it. Such wide and thick styling may not be very flattering for her face shape. Overall it's quite boxy.
November 21

Stana Katic (32) at the 2010 American Music Awards. The brunette actress who plays Kate Beckett (Castle) has classic long hair with large waves. Simply beautiful! A few other stars, as usual for the AMAs, had wild tresses. Kesha had a funky high thing (punk-inspired?) and Pink looked very old with a new color: silver!

Taylor Swift (20) has finally bought a hair straightener (or somebody stole her curling iron)! All her trademark curls and waves she has had for years were gone at the CMAs. She unveiled her very traditional stick-straight new hairstyle with super long bangs and lots of multitonal highlights. Taylor has subtle red panels with her blonde streaks. Ever notice how straight hair shows highlights much better than other textures? If she falls in love with the colors, she might stick with her new texture...

Halle Berry (44) hasn't aged in ten years and once again she has the very short black hair style that is quite similar to her previous extremely popular crop almost a decade ago. Her extensions are long gone and there is little dispute this length is the most flattering for her. Almost 80% of women in a poll said she's better looking with short than long hair. Love the texture, too! It works for Halle, but this is still a boyish pixie haircut, and like what many men wear today. She's not the only woman with it in 2010. Compare hers to Ginnifer Goodwin's:

One the most startling makeovers of the year was this new pixie. Ginnifer had very long locks before they were sheared off. See the makeover page for both the before and after pictures in a short Flash movie. The change seems to pretty much look okay on the beautiful actress, partly because she has very clear skin. But most women usually don't approve such drastic changes, according to various makeover polls.

AnnaLynne McCord (23) hit the red carpet with a huge mane. Those are some serious hair extensions! A fair guess would suggest half the hair you see is articificial. Although it is not completely convincing, it is fun and dramatic. You have to give the girl props for trying something different now when so few celebrities are so flexible and creative, addicted to the status quo.
November 14

Mandy Moore (26) with a high chignon at the premiere of Tangled in Los Angeles. It is a cute formal updo with some very thin loose sections beside her cheeks. It has prom potential but it also seems as if it should be messier or neater. But it's only slightly messy and the design is consistently like that from top to bottom. Mandy is a tall girl and this high style draws attention to her height.
November 10

Sandra Lee (44) at the 44th Annual CMA Awards. She has a classic evening look. This is probably the most popular wavy long hairstyle today. It is simple, cute, and sexy. The structure is set with very straight hair from the crown and then waves starting at ear level down to the ends.

Gretchen Wilson (37) lightened her dark brown hair with a golden red color. Her roots betrayed her natural color which she could have done something about for the big event. The style itself is big, thick, and casual, making it fine for her profession. It has some similarity to long layered hairstyles from the 1980s yet without their neatness.
November 7

Has your hair been turning heads lately? Guess who that is behind the heavy angled bangs? It's Rachel McAdams (31) last night at the premiere of her new movie Morning Glory.

Rachel looks fantastic with this flirty design. It's one of her perfect medium hairstyles. Her blonde highlights are also really nice; the contrast is just right. Overall it may be a little large for her face but it's hot! The dynamics of the structure between the loose parts and set sections makes it a winner. Last year she was a brunette but blonde is her best color.
November 5

Cheryl Cole (27) still has her cherry red hair color. The UK singer got the dye job back in the summer. Cheryl says she's always loved red hair. Reaction on the British Glamour magazine website forum has been both positive and negative. Some women love it and say it makes her look completely different; while others say it makes her seem cheap and more like a teen rebel.
There is a suggestion by the Daily Mail she was inspired by Sharon Osborne. There is speculation, according to a blogger, the makeover was related to her breakup with husband Ashley Cole as an outward expression of inward change. Many girls admitted in a poll they change their hair after a relationship ends.
It is a fairly uncommon celebrity hair color, although Rihanna (see below) has also gone red. Maybe the popular light red hair trend we've seen for a few years will soon give way to the darker hues? Peaches Geldof got a similar shade but denied she copied Cheryl. "I dyed it," she Tweeted, "before I knew she had dyed it."

Rihanna colored her hair again to a brand new deep red which is almost wine. She previously had a bright, fiery copper color in the summer at a concert. It seemed like a wig.

Her latest hue she had for a book signing is just about as intense and so it's more likely to be a one-time trial. Nobody else has copied her in this regard so it's not a trend yet. It's been a few years since red hair was trendy. Nowdays it seems the haircolor fashion is at the other end of the spectrum (subtle v. dramatic).

Keyshia Cole (29) had black hair in 2009 but then she followed the red haircolor trend which fellow African American singer Kandi Burruss helped set. This picture was taken Nov. 6 at a music video shoot. It's a funky red updo with lots of curls on top to make it high in addition to the long and dramatic curly bangs. It's like a reorganized wedding hairstyle with some 1940s inspiration.
Do you know how many women are natural redheads? According to a poll on this site, it's less than 14%. Related gallery: Ladies in Red.
October 30

Roisin Murphy (37) at the Elton John Winter Ball. The Irish singer-songwriter has a popular medium hairstyle with bangs. It's very straight but very glossy and attractive. The look is perfect at night and of course blonde hair always complements a black dress. It works for women of any age.

Masculine structure with very feminine touches makes an intriguing fashion statement. Kendra is wearing a black fedora hat with a wide baby pink satin ribbon and discrete bow. It is perfectly paired with her black pin-striped suit with pink stripes. This dramatic style is a uniquely fun and flirty option at Halloween or on a bad hair day. She makes a good faux gansta lady.
October 28

Joanne Froggartt (31) has a cute haircut similar in length to her fellow British actress Rosamund Pike (below), but her haircolor had a little more red in it. Roots need some work but it's still an adorable style and makes her look younger by at least five years. It's simple and perfect! The pictures of Joanne and Rosamund were taken at a premiere in Leicester Square, London.

Rosamund Pike (31) has a new cute medium to long hairstyle. It is casually dimensional and softly romantic. The blonde Brit has it center-parted with big thick waves and curls. It could be slightly on the messy side for evening but it's perfect all day. Great photo of the lovely actress. Note: Rosamund's wikipedia page hairstyle is even more hot.
The new hair magazine (above, top) has pics of what's current and the inside scoop on what's coming into fashion.
The 15 top star hairstyles:
1. Jessica Stroup's flirty crop
2. Heidi Klum's choppy bob
3. Jessica Alba's pompadour
4. Victoria Beckham's lifted waves
5. Debby Ryan's dimensional drama
6. Ashley Greene's braided accent
7. Katy Perry's cool curl
8. Emilie De Ravin's hip headband
9. Alison Haislip's geek chic
10. Taylor Momsen's sleek tweak
11. Kirsten Stewart's retro glam
12. Lucy Hale's luxe locks
13. Julianne Hough's angled layers
14. Sara Paxton's easy crop
15. Anya Monzikova's retro look
Long Hairstyles: Texture is definitely in for longer locks--particularly natural-looking bouncy curls. "I've also noticed side ponytails, maybe with a little braid," says Ryan Teal of the Teal Salon in Portland, OR. "Both are super-hip."
Medium Hairstyles: With mid-length cuts, texture is also a plus for that back-to-school style. "It's not a contrived curl," says Teal, "it's like the hair has movement without trying." Another fun look is pigtails worn very low, below the bump of the head, with loose ends.
Short Hairstyles: For teens going short, says Hair Preview's beauty editor, think ultra-short like Mia Wasikowska's spiky, messy pixie. Longer crown layers add texture, which is trend across the board.
2011 will mark the first milestone for Beautiful Hairstyles: the end of its first decade online providing hairstyles pictures for women. Since 2001, this site has offered the best photos of modern female haircuts. 2009 and 2010 updates added many new pics (over 200), and you can look forward to many more regular updates in 2011.
The 2010 hairstyles page is already stacked with over 75 pictures, so this new page picks up where it left off with summer and fall 2010 hairstyles. They will help you keep your look current and are your best clue to what we will see become the hottest 2011 hairstyles.

Katie Holmes (31) has a great new hair cut which could set a new hair trend. Her previously popular bob is long gone, and now she sports this voluminous medium hairstyle with richly textured waves and sharply angled full fringe. It's bigger and thicker than anything she's ever had it. It not only looks good for women her age but also teenagers. It's a perfect every-day modern hair style.

Naomi Watts (41) with a blunt medium bob hairstyle just past her shoulders. It's straight, simple, and pretty. The bangs are soft so the blunt ends are a surprise.

Gretchen, the thirtysomething blue-eyed blonde reality TV star, launched a new makeup line, but it's her hair that usually gets more attention. This is hot!

Olya Zueva (Salt) at the premiere of her first movie wearing a cute short bob hairstyle with bangs. This is a youthful brunette design that is for the girl with a sweet and playful personality. The lightly wavy sides look fun and feminine.

Pixie Lott (19) has bright blonde hair with cute curls. It's a great fun color for summer. The teen singer is a big hit on the UK music scene and her hair isn't so bad, either, possibly with help from hair extensions. Below is a pic of her last month with no curls.

Pixie's haircut with soft waves.

Bianca (23) at the Duke of Essex Polo Cup. This is one of the hottest hairstyles to come out of the UK in recent months if not years. Long piecey waves with tons of volume and no bangs.

Rachel Reenstra (40) has gorgeous long hair with blonde highlights and brown lowlights. Rachel is probably wearing hair extensions. Compare her 2010 look above with her 2009 haircut below:

Rachel's medium hairstyle with razored's layers and some flips. This is a good, modern, fun style for day or night.

Elaine Hendrix (39) has a cute layered medium hairstyle with some chunky sections. Note how the layers are chin length. It is simple and easy to style. Elaine likes to dress up; she often wears different and dramatic hairstyles when she goes to major Hollywood events. In 2004, for example, she had a spiky updo with blonde bangs which looked as if they had been dipped in black ink! In the above picture she was tressed less formally at a Los Angeles charity event.

Ellen Hollman (27) has a classic wavy hairstyle. Her long lustrous light brown hair has very thick sections full of big waves. She has lots of volume and shine, and it looks really hot. Her haircolor is also flattering for her skin tone. Ellen is definitely on the level of celebrity hair models!

CC Perkinson got a haircolor makeover. Before she was very dark brown (more like black); after she has brown hair with red highlights. It looks really nice and it brings out her eyes. Compare the above pic in June to her color in May:

Whitney Port (25) with a big sexy haircut that totally frames her face (top, bottom, and both sides). It's pretty simple but hot and glam. Color change is a bit distracting but reasonably gradual and not too jarring.

Laura Dern (43) with a new haircut for mature women. She looks younger because her hair is styled similar to how teen girls like to do their hair. In addition to the gorgeous feminine style, her blonde color is also very rich. This pic was at the Los Angeles Women in Film festival. Laura's new hairstyle is a good makeover from her previous one (below).

Laura Dern in 2009 with long dark blonde hair and full bangs plus big chunky wavy sections.

Kelis (30) has had an extreme haircolor makeover changing it from black to red. It is a fairly rare look for African American women but more common among artists who like to mix things up and stand out.

Nanna Oland Fabricius, the singer, has a hot long hairstyle that is lightly teased and wavy. Her colors are interesting; she appears to have some very finely sliced thin hair highlights in her dark blonde tresses. You also can't help but notice her beautiful facial structure is like that of a supermodel.

Latest Formal Hairstyles

Anna Trebunskaya (29) is a popular, fun, and quirky pro on Dancing with The Stars. Here she has one of the most gorgeous evening hairstyles. A few years ago, Anna had light red locks, but the new dark color is richer and more dramatic. It is actually more convincing and prettier for her. The Hawaiian inspiration with the big flower is sweet but the bold pink is almost over the top. Still it's a great example of perfect glamour curls--almost like what you see in some old movies.

Amber Heard (24) in July with a formal updo hair style. When her hair isn't tied up in a bun like this, it could be down, long, and gorgeous with perfectly layered sassy flips:

Roberta Myers, the editor-in-chief of Elle magazine, with an elegant half updo. This picture is of her at a special event for the July issue of Elle dedicated to women in music.

Katie Melua (25) in London, UK. With her semi-sheer black-and-gold evening dress the singer has a bold brunette half-up formal hairstyle full of messy curls. It's cute and sassy!

Jaimie Hilfiger (22) is a fashion model based in Beverly Hills, California. She's the niece of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. This photo is from an Awards Gala. She looked glamorous with full evening makeup and long almost platinum blonde shiny hair.

Denise Richards (39) looks radiant in this gorgeous black-and-white portrait. A hot hair style and a great smile is the perfect ticket to make the best first impression.

Christina Aguilera (29) with fancy new rockabilly hair style at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards in June. This unique retro hairdo is inspired by ladies of the 1950s.

Imelda May's rockabilly hairdo at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Rockabilly is apparently her thing, so she most often looks retro. Her hairstyle is bold, fun, colorful, and partly circular.

Katy Perry (25) wearing a vivid royal blue wig with bowlcut bangs. Quite possibly the first blue wig ever seen on the red carpet. And maybe the last.
