Celebrity Hair Makeovers
A few years ago, Celine Dion's dramatic hair
makeover, from very long to very short, shocked a
lot of people. More than 90% of women who voted
online said she looked better before the
cut.
When Halle Berry went from short to long,
however, there was a different consensus. Close
to 80% think Halle looks best in her signature short
hairstyle.
Faith Hill's new short haircut was also
controversial. Most felt she looked better with
her long trademark tresses which captured her
image as a long-haired blonde country goddess.
All celebrities, however, don't have the
option of getting an extreme makeover. Sometimes
it is even in their contract. Felicity
star Keri Russell got into a lot of trouble after
lopping off her hair; that decision in fact was
blamed for the show's ratings problems.
Since then, Katherine Heigl of Grey's
Anatomy has been begging her producers to
allow her to get an extreme makeover.
"I would love to cut all my hair off into
a really short, punky haircut," said Heigl,
"but the show won't let me. I've asked--a
lot. Maybe I'll wear them down by season six."
Before You Get a New Haircut
Hair makeovers can be liberating--if you get
what you want and like it. The usual advice is to
start with a modest change before going to
extremes. It may not be enough, but it can help
you get used to a new idea.
For example, change your hair color by a few
shades, or go from long to medium before going to
short.
Do not go crazy like Britney Spears and cut
off everything (unless you're joining the armed
forces). Before she got her hands on the shears,
the hair salon owner asked Britney if she'd want
to wait until the morning and see if baldness was
what she really wanted.
If you're deciding it's time for something
completely different, it's a good idea to print
out a picture of the look you like, then
superimpose your own photo. Get all the visual
help you can before making the leap of faith.
New Looks for New Seasons
New seasons inspire new looks. Spring and
summer in particular inspire makeovers,
especially shorter haircuts. Other motivations
for changing your hair are a new job, the end of
a relationship, and the beginning of a new
philosophy on life.
Or simply because you're so bored with your
hair. A huge of percentage of women visiting this
site said the main problem they had with their
hair was boredom.
Color is much easier to change than length, of
course, but it could be more inspirational to you.
If a radical color change isn't going to help you
at work, modest changes could be acceptable. Hair
highlighting is still very popular--both extreme
contrast and subtle highlights--and often
suitably update a new look.
When Jennifer Aniston, a long-time blonde who
usually has highlighted hair, finally went back
to her brunette roots a few years ago, the change
was very popular. However, when Britney Spears
tried the same thing, most said they felt she's
better as a blonde.
Hair Extensions
Hair extensions are now more popular than they
have ever been, thanks in large part to
celebrities using them. Clip-on hair extensions
are a good way to start if you've never used them
before, and wonder what it would be like to have
long hair again; if you like them, then consider
the more permanent and more expensive hair
extensions.
Of course it's much easier to add extra length
than cutting off all your hair. Depending on your
hair growth rate, you might have to wait three to
six months, if not longer, to get all your hair
back.
Whatever makeover you think you'll decide to
try--long, medium, or short--blonde, brunette,
red, or black--see if you can get it to match
your personality and be a good representation of
the new you.
Make a choice that will last more than a few
hours based on something deeper than your mood.
Give it a few days or even a week before you
decide. Let the idea 'grow' on you and then you
may want to ask your friends if they agree with
your plan.
'Oh My Gosh! She Cut Off All Her Hair!'
Two surprising reactions can result from a
hair makeover. You may love it like Faith Hill
did when she lost her hair, but much of the
public didn't; or others may love your new style,
but you don't, as was the case with Jennifer
Aniston when she got her first (and last?) short
hairstyle.
You may never know what you like until you try
it. Is your best new look ever just a haircut
away? Sometimes the worst thing you can do is
nothing.
In response to the online poll question, Have
you ever had a dramatic hair makeover (very long
to very short)?, 70% out of nearly 9,000
women said yes.
