Female Haircuts: Elegant Styling Ideas for Older Women
Like most hairstyles magazines, the focus of hairstyles online is on teens and the younger crowd with very few styles for older women. That seems odd, because most women don't lose interest in their hair when they hit 40! It's not like with most middle-aged men whose hair falls out and then they never have any more hairstyle options.
Based on the organization of this site, here is your best opportunity to find excellent hairstyles of women your age—better than what you'd see in a magazine—and best of all it's completely free.
A significant number of mature women use the internet to find ideas for their next haircut searching from home or at work. So this new hairstyle gallery was created. First it was for women in their 40s; and then another section for women in their 50s was added. There are ladies in their 60s who also search online for hair designs and so more photos for them will be added, too.
As you know the majority of ladies in Western culture are led to believe once they turn 40, they should not wear long hairstyles. So the majority of the pics are of short haircuts, but there are also some medium and longer ones, too.

Heidi Collins just turned 40 on June 1, 2008. She now has a chic bob haircut like some of her colleagues at CNN.

Sharon Lawrence (46) with a new medium bob hairstyle. She used to have light brown curly hair (photo below on this page), but as of April 2008 she has straight partly red hair with heavy bangs. This simple and fashionable bob has a good shape that creates a lot of dimension around her face. The coloring style is very attractive, too, the way the red color spreads out from the crown, has subtle contrast with her brown base, and appears only in moderation. Subtle highlighting, incidentally, is one of the top hair coloor trends among mature women. Which, frankly, makes sense. When was the last time you saw a woman over 40 with bold highlights that were flattering?

Jami Gertz (42) got an extreme makeover. She cut off all her hair to join the bob craze that has swept America. It's a nice fashionable bob hairstyle for 2008, and it looks good with her face shape, especially with the layers. But it must have been difficult for Jami to cut off so much beautiful hair. Below is a picture of her a few years ago. More than half of the brunette brilliance is gone.

Susan Blakely (55), the actress and former fashion model, sports this fashionable new 2008 chin-length bob hairstyle with bangs. It is similar to Anna Wintour's bob but looks slightly more piecey.

Corine Touzet (49) with very flippy short hair. Decent blowout on this mature style that looks thick on top but is well balanced with the flippy sides. Corine has some very subtle highlights that look quite naturally colored by the summer sun. (This is a June 2008 picture.)

Patti LuPone (59) has short hair in the low-maintenance style that's popular with older women. It's an ear-length but ear-covering cut from this summer (mid-June) that has a splintered fringe. Slightly wispy section at the parting on top softens her look. Patti just won a Tony.
Kristin Chenoweth (39). Just a month before her 40th birthday, Kristin had this easy down style for straight medium-length hair. Beautiful photo, isn't it? Kristin appears to have very light copper highlights. Subtle enough you almost miss them.
Brooke Shields (43) still has her trademark tresses. Like many models she still has long hair but she's changed the color. It's dark brunette with perfect low-key highlighting. (June 15, 2008)
Kelli O'Hara (33) went out for the evening in a strapless dress wearing this easy formal bob hairstyle. Lovely dimensional waves. A classic simply elegant hair do often worn by ladies in 30s to 60s. It looks as if Kelli's charming style has a few faux layers.

Probably has universal appeal. It is suitable for women in a vast age range from teens through ladies in their 50s or even 60s. Meg now has very long hair. She probably hasn't cut it since this shot.

She's a rebel for growing her hair out when other ladies her age are cutting it off. Although perhaps since she always used to have short hair in her 30s, she just got bored of that length.

The base haircolor is sensational and the combination of very thin slices of blonde with those sexy golden brown waves (and maybe some red) is so attractive. Her colorist is a genius. Felicity Huffman (41) with perfect hair. It's one of the best medium haircuts for middle-aged ladies. It's stylish with a casual vibe. The texture is just right for this hair length. A+.

This flippy summer style has beautifully balanced texture on the top, sides, and bangs. It effectively helps project an attitude of sweet, casual warmth (which is one of the top characteristics of mature women).
Kyra Sedgwick (41) with very big or wide long hair. The volume of this hairstyle is incredible. The way her big soft waves turn into thick chunks of hair and wrap around each other produces this voluminous style and is so hot. And it looks as if Kyra did it with her natural hair, not extensions. You almost never see tresses this thick in Hollywood or anywhere. That's one lucky lady.

Joan Allen (46) with long soft curls. Joan had one of the best bob hairstyles you'll ever seen in 2001 or so; then she let her hair grow out. Here it's looking really glamorous and feminine again. Very nice dimensional down style for a summer evening out.
Marla Maples (42) has a light to ash blonde evening hairdo. It is an attractive and thick shoulder-length style with some layers and one fairly inconspicuous brown low light streak.
Fran Drescher (45) with long curly hairstyle. She always had the hottest long very dark hair on The Nanny back in the 1990s, arguably the best hair on TV, and it's still looking pretty hot. Although it is very big, it is balanced; there is about equal length or distance on the top, sides, and even at the bottom (chin to shoulders). Fun style and it looks like Melody is having fun.
