Katie Holmes Makeover in Summer 2007 from Long to Short Haircut

In August 2001, Celebrity Hairstyles magazine showed a picture of Katie Holmes with short hair; it was a beveled bob hairstyle with very choppy bangs.

"Joey Potter," observed CH, "has worn the same blunt, brunette hairstyle for the entire run of Dawson's Creek, though this season she's pumped things up a bit. So when portrayer Katie Holmes gets to step out on the town and out of character, she craves a completely different look.

"This bobbed wig with bangs is a fun way for her to experiment with a different style and color without cutting an inch!

"The shorter length is incredibly flattering on the young actress--could this be a sneak preview of a new cut on the horizon?"

Fast forward to 2007.

Katie Holmes has had an extreme makeover--she cut off all her hair! Well, not all, but a lot--about 12 inches.

In the spring Katie had her hair lovely and long, which is how we have all seen her for many years (see sidebar shot from 2003).

Now all of a sudden, as summer starts, she has been transformed into a new woman with a stylish chin-length sexy short hairstyle.

What do hairstylists think of the new hairdo?

"It's sophisticated and chic," says celebrity stylist Cody Hepworth. "It's edgy and modern; it makes her look womanly. This cut is so versatile. It can be worn smooth and sleek or messy and casual."

The press is all over this haircut.

"Introducing the Katie cut!" was the headline in Life & Style Weekly (July 2). A two-page spread with five pictures showed different angles of the haircut. "Will Katie Holmes' sexy new bob start a Hollywood craze?" it asked.

Why did she cut off her hair? According to the tab's insider, "Katie hopes her sophisticated cut will help her land more serious and mature film roles."

"Say goodbye to sweet old, long-locked Katie Holmes," gushed Star magazine (July 2), "and hello to the trendy babe who's taken her place!

"On June 12, Mrs. Tom Cruise, 28, debuted a seriously sexy new look--from her edgy, side-swept bob to her ferocious animal print dress."

But was another reason to keep up with the Joneses, or in this case, the Victoria Beckham?

The press has noted Posh Spice and Katie Holmes are new friends, and question whether Katie copied Posh's style.

"She looks great," said Victoria Beckham.

"What about the rumours," asked Star, "that Katie's new 'do is modeled after her BFF Victoria Beckham's own chicly chopped bob?"

Says Victoria: "I wouldn't say it was necessarily inspired by me. When girls are friends, they inspire each other."
